Blacksheeps design of Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar.

BY PRESS RELEASE / Jun 29, 2012

Blacksheep, the leading hospitality design agency based in London, showcases its latest restaurant and bar design project; Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar.

SitSituated on the River Thames with views of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye, Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar, the new restaurant located in the 5* London Marriott Hotel County Hall has opened its doors.

Blacksheep’s concept pays homage to the restaurant’s namesake James Gillray, a famed caricaturist of the lateeighteenth century, and its most English of locations – the Grade II listed County Hall, built 100 years ago to house London’s government.

Blacksheep has designed and created a quintessential English drinking and dining experience, playing on the eccentric but charming details of classic British lighting and furniture pieces. The sumptuous interior, with English Oak table tops, a nine-metre long Chesterfield sofa and bespoke chandeliers, is complemented by every detail, from the menu, to the tailored staff uniform, through to the Sheffield silverware.

Examples of James Gillray’s political satire illustrations adorn the oak panel walls within the steak house restaurant. Further bespoke British quirky characteristics have been created exclusively for Gillray’s such as the chutney counter, which displays fine English produce.

Solid oak parquet flooring leads up to a space at the far end of the restaurant, which is defined by a bespoke carpet and a fine dining area. Chandeliers drop from the high ceiling to create warmth within the restaurant and add a softglow complementing the grand space and its luxurious furnishings.

Gillray’s bar accommodates 70 guests and is one of the hotel’s most impactful rooms, featuring a grand glass and gold laquered drinks station, sumptuous wing back sofas and a bespoke petal chandelier. The circular style bar seating area is well defined by a bespoke carpet and the leather seating flaunts a distinctive colour palette of teal, dark blue and mustard yellow. The drinks menu offers guests a selection of 39 English gins and a variety of cocktails with humorous names such as ‘Gunpowder & Smoke’ and ‘The Morning after Marriage’.

Commenting on the design concept, Tim Mutton, Managing Director of Blacksheep said,

  • We are very excited to have been the design team working alongside the Marriott on this unique project. The heritage of the building over looking the most iconic areas of London provided the inspiration for the quintessential English restaurant, and was the underpinning design theme that set the tone of the space.
